Smoky Hills Public Television
Smoky Hills Public Television is a non-profit PBS station that proudly serves all of central and Western Kansas. Our mission -- to provide our region with programming and services that nourish our curiosity, enrich our lives and makes Kansas a better place to live and work.
We accomplish this by:
- Serving as a platform to address community and regional issues.
- Telling the stories of central and western Kansas through outstanding local programming on a
wide variety of topics such as arts, public affairs, sports, agriculture and Kansas history.
- Providing safe, innovative and educational programming for children.
- Serving at-risk kids with our Literacy Leadership for Kansas Children program that provides parental workshops and over 8,000 books for kids.
- Working with Kansas state agencies like Kansas Department of Health and Environment in sponsoring parent and teacher workshops for over 1,000 adults, 4,500 children, and distributing more than 2,000 books to children in central and western Kansas.
- Sponsoring the PBS Kids GO! Writer’s Contest in central and western Kansas.
Historic Information: Smoky Hills Public Television was incorporated in March of 1978 as a part of the plan to extend public television service to un-served areas in central and western Kansas.
Today, Smoky Hills serves 71 counties in Kansas -- utilizing four television transmitters, partnering with over 75 local cable companies, and Dish and DirecTV.
